Vision is more than just eyesight. Eyesight measures how well one can read a chart. Vision is a result of active interpretation and understanding of the information that is available to the eyes to see.
Visual performance can be affected by:
- Difficulties with efficient movement movements
- Difficulties with eye teaming
- Difficulties with reduced vision due to long-sightedness or short-sightedness.
- Difficulties interpreting visual discrimination of various objects.
Vision Checklist:
A. Appearance of the eyes:
- Does either eye turning in/out?
- Do eyes/lids look red/crusty/watery/irritated ?
B. Complaints when using eyes(school work and near tasks/technology)
- Headaches/nausea after reading
- Burning/itchy eyes
- Words "swimming" on the page/blurred or double vision
C. When reading
- Does your child lose place frequently/use finger to follow the text/skip or re-read lines or words?
- Does your child confuse similar words/mixes up 'b' 'p' 'q' 'd'?
- Does your child lose interest quickly or avoids reading?
- Does your child hold book too close to face or shuts one eye?
D. When writing
- Does your child reverse letters/numbers or order of words/letters?
- Does your child write uphill or downhill/leans to one side or closes one eye?
- Does your child use their finger as "spacer" and struggles to maintain correct letter/word formation?
- Does your child make mistakes when copying from white board?
E. Other signs to look out for
- Does your child blink/rub eyes frequently or squints while performing visual tasks?
- Does your child confuse right and left?
- Does your child need to touch feel things to understand them better?
- Does your child struggles with similarities and differences?
- Does your child fatigue easily while performing visual tasks?
